those authenticator thingies really are good for your account, why?
TRY TO LOG IN WHEN YOUR AUTHENTICATOR IS BORKEN!
I managed to kill my phone by trying to move some sort of cache to a different location (android) and had to restore a rom without the authenticator; i can't log in anymore.
To get my acount back i have to prove me is me by either remembering my secret anwer ánd question which i thought of 4 years ago or by scanning my passport in order to let blizzard removing my authenticator from my account.
A lot of hassle which will take some time (read days) before I can log into my non hacked account again; so kudo's blizzard!

By the powers* that might be I introduce the new main URL of this blog: http://www.logarie.nl/blog
The old URL will still work so you don't have to update your bookmarks ;)

Removing gnome from Ubuntu
Last time i installed ubuntu on my server i used a live cd cooked on a usb stick since the server lacks total cd support.
It's nice but it starts a lot of services and installs a lot of programs you just don't need for a computer you only access with ssh, so to remove all gnome related items from a ubuntu setup issue the following command:
sudo apt-get remove aisleriot alacarte app-install-data-partner apport-gtk aptdaemon at-spi binfmt-support brasero brltty-x11 capplets-data checkbox checkbox-gtk cli-common compiz compiz-core Pet collector
As a pet collector in wow (at the magical 111 pets atm) I really enjoyed this comic:

The very best of, part 6!
Every once in a while Willie, dappie and me create a monster of a cd filled with mp3 and ogg vorbis files with songs we like, we like so much we want the other 2 to hear them.
We've set a date for the new release at 14 feb. So instead of feeling sad we didn't make it to the 2nd round in someones valentine show we can enjoy fresh new tunes; some godly some just plain crap (most of them deliverd by Dappie btw).

my first SSD
Yesterday i got my new SSD (Solid State Drive) from intel and installed it in my XPS 430. Went smooth though i had to tell my bios to check for sata port 2 as well. Afterwards I swapped the SSD and my old boot drive, installed Windows 7 Ultimate (fresh legal copy courtesy of my brother) and was set off to play wow in less then an hour! After a few instances; checking loading times and damn! it's faster, I dived into the world of AHCI vs. IDE and how to enable it. Apperently the XPS 430 doesn't have AHCI (can choose between IDE/RAID and RAID) and in RAID mode the controller is shown as a RAID controller not an AHCI controller so i guess it's no AHCI for me (or am i just confused about all of it?).
This evening i plugged in the trusty USB pen drive (nicknamed usb stok) and booted into Ubuntu live to repartition the old HD. That's where I made a "mistake" by *not* unchecking the read-only test drive and now I have to wait 3 hours before I'm done moving 500GB from the end of the drive to the beginning of the drive ...
Should be done in about an hour so I'm going to send the PC a
shutdown -h 2:00
To save some money ;) On the saving: I'm currently trying to get the most out of one battery run on the milestone and hero mobile devices by using JuiceDefender/UltimateJuice; That nifty program can shutdown 3g/wifi for some time and then enable it again to sync before it shuts down again; pretty smart if you ask me.
Before JuiceDefender my milestone lasted up to 29 hours with sync on, wifi off, normal usage, last run it was well over 46 hours (which is still only 2 days ofc :P)!
The Hero (which is just syncing 3g' ing but being overly used) is getting around 110 hours atm! A whopping 4.5 days; When the hero was my main device i had to rejuice it every day.
Another great program is Battery Booster: Turn of 3g/wifi at night and turn it back on in the morning (this feature is also enabled in JuiceDefender if you buy UltimateJuice).
For Android users i highly recommend JuiceDefender: Use the Juice when you need it, save it when you don't!
Silverlight wmv playback without using http
Sounds funny but is it even possible?
Our windows media server doesn't have an open http port only rtsp and mms but everything i send to it with a silverlight control is over http.
Edit: Seems like silverlight doesn't use rtsp and mms (as moniker, not the protocol) is depricated so the answer is: NO; you need http in order for silverlight to stream from a windows media server.
sick at home so what do you do?
Well I upgraded my server :p
It all started yesterday by pulling out my old cheapy system (value asus barebone) and checking if i could use it for something and apparently i could!
So I bought a new ethernet card (gigabit) and a new slow but big harddrive (samsung ecosomething 1.5TB) for €100,- and went back to bed; ye it was that hard for me to go out into the cold :p
This morning I put the system together and installed ubuntu 9.10 from the trusty old usb stick in less then 10 minutes again. Made an export from wordpress and set up the new system (with the trusty laptop ofc; you won't see me shiver in front of a pc while i can do it from bed *hatjoe!* bless me.) Fastest way of transferring the data would have been to plug one of the old drives into the new system but guess what: lazy!
On my old server all data was stored under /media (bad choice ofc) and decided to put it all on a partition called /data this time. At first i wanted to use dd for transferring the data but decided that would take precious time away from sleep so ended up with scp (since i know that syntax by heart) over the local network @ 100mbit/sec since the old server doesn't have a gigabit port. Transferring 400GB that way takes some time but since it's send and forget i didn't bother about it.
Meanwhile i tweaked the new wordpress instance the way i like it, setted up samba with less restrictions; hey don't need to exclude a roomie from my folders now since i don't have a roomie anymore ;) Pimped the homepage (not many people go there but the old one was really horrible) and went back to being ill.
7 hours after it all started i switched the IP's in the router so http would go to the new server instead of the old and sent the final shutdown commando to the old one.
The old server will be given away except for 1 drive which i will use as offline backup; I went from a raid1 setup to a non-raid setup and all those albums, well they are precious.
So all in all it went übersmooth and for the choosen techniques quite fast (scp instead of dd or cp). Actual stats of this little spot on teh web are always found here
p.s. I still feel like crap :(
To keep record
Gonna keep track of my amount of badass Flu/heavy colds i have a year so here we go:
Colds: 1 (started zat 23. 01)
Website stats 2009
Wat nutteloze stats voor Lo-Ga-Rie over 2009:
1,883 visits used 26 browser and OS combinations
- Firefox: 51%
- Internet Explorer: 16%
- Chrome: 10%
- Safari: 5%
